What are DELF and DALF?

DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) and DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are the only diplomas for French as a foreign language issued by the French Ministry of Education. They are valid for life and recognised by employers, universities, and immigration authorities around the world.

Each diploma corresponds to one of the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), giving candidates a clear target and an internationally respected credential.

Six Levels Aligned to the CEFR

Choose the diploma that matches your current ability. DELF covers A1 to B2; DALF covers C1 and C2.

DELF A1

Beginner
Understand and use familiar everyday expressions. Introduce yourself and others and ask/answer simple questions.

DELF A2

Elementary
Communicate in routine tasks requiring direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities.

DELF B1

Intermediate
Deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling and produce connected text on familiar topics.

DELF B2

Upper Intermediate
Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity and produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.

DELF C1

Advanced
Express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.

DELF C2

Proficiency
Express yourself spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely, distinguishing finer shades of meaning even in complex situations.

Exam Format & Components

Each DELF / DALF exam assesses four core language skills through five test components.

Listening

Comprehension of recordings ranging from short exchanges to longer interviews and presentations, depending on the level.

Reading

Understanding of authentic texts such as articles, adverts, letters, and literary extracts, with comprehension and analysis tasks.

Writing

Written production tasks including messages, letters, essays, or syntheses, assessed for structure, accuracy, and register.

Spoken Production

A monologue task where candidates present, argue, or synthesise a topic, demonstrating fluency, coherence, and range.

Spoken Interaction

A structured discussion with an examiner, testing the ability to exchange information, justify opinions, and negotiate meaning.
